I am a graduate student in English literature at the University of Florida. I’m writing my dissertation on how authors create socioeconomic adversities in the lives of Victorian daughters to expose and test their moral character. At the same time that their response to class changes can reveal moral strength or weakness, the author’s narration of women’s somatic responses (i.e. blushing) to these adversities can suggest the presence of a sensitive moral center.
